13.06.2020 - In den USA schafft die Rassismusdebatte gerade etwas, das bis vor kurzem kaum vorstellbar war: Sie drängt das Thema COVID-19 in den Hintergrund. Die öffentliche Meinung ist dort inzwischen so sensibilisiert, dass nicht nur Äußerungen verurteilt werden, die im Verdacht stehen, rassistisch zu sein, sondern auch Versäumnisse, sich offen zu „Black Lives Matter“ zu bekennen. Diese Diskussion erfasste nun auch den Spieleherstellerverband Game Manufacturers Association und dessen Veranstaltung Origins Online, eine virtuelle Spielemesse, die am 19.-21.6. stattfinden sollte. Weil sich GAMA anscheinend zu viel Zeit ließ, sich in einem Statement offen auf die Seite der Protestierenden zu stellen, sagten zahlreiche Verlage ihre Teilnahme an der Origins Online ab. Die Seite Kotaku kommentierte, diese Funkstille sei „mehr als ein Schweigen […] eine Weigerung, sich für einige der wichtigsten und verwundbarsten Mitglieder einzusetzen“, die sich „schon seit langem mit allem möglichen Mist auseinandersetzen“ müssten, nur weil sie im Brettspielbereich existierten; die Branche habe noch immer große Probleme mit Hass und Vorurteilen. Kotaku führt zum Vergleich den Videospiele-Herstellerverband Entertainment Software Association an, der schon am 2.6. ein entsprechendes Statement abgab; dies sei das „absolute Minimum an Aufwand und Unterstützung“, doch es sei „immerhin etwas“. Je länger GAMA absichtlich oder unabsichtlich schweige, desto schlimmer.
Am 10.6. meldete sich schließlich GAMA selbst zu Wort: Der Verband glaube an den Grundsatz „Black Lives Matter“ und verurteile unmissverständlich Rassismus und Gewalt gegen Menschen anderer Hautfarben. Man habe dies zu spät kommuniziert, wofür sich der Verband entschuldige. Die Ungerechtigkeiten von heute verlangten, dass jeder Mensch guten Gewissens deutlich mache, wo er stehe, und GAMA wünschte, man wäre proaktiver gewesen und hätte den eigenen Stimmen effektiver Gehör verschafft.
Das GAMA-Team und die Verlage hätten zwar „Wunder bewirkt“, um die Messe so kurzfristig zu organisieren; unter diesen Umständen sei es aber nicht zu verantworten, das Event stattfinden zu lassen, weshalb es nun ausfalle. Alle Aussteller, Sponsoren, Werbetreibenden und Ticketkäufer sollen ihr Geld zurückerhalten. Darüber hinaus will GAMA es ermöglichen, diese Rückerstattungen freiwillig an Bürgerrechtsorganisationen wie die NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) zu spenden, und die so zustande gekommene Summe mit einer eigenen Spende in derselben Höhe aufstocken.
Die reguläre Origins Game Fair war zunächst auf den Oktober verschoben worden. Jetzt sagte GAMA die Schau ganz ab, weil im Herbst eine zweite Viruswelle drohe und es Unsicherheit gebe, welche Beschränkungen der Bundesstaat Ohio für Großveranstaltungen erlässt. Man wolle den Teilnehmern damit so viel Zeit wie möglich geben, um darauf zu reagieren und ihre Pläne anzupassen.

In the United States, the debate on racism is doing something that until recently was hard to imagine: it is pushing the issue of COVID-19 into the background. Public opinion is now so sensitised it not only condemns statements suspected of being racist, but also punishes failure to openly commit to "Black Lives Matter". This discussion has now also affected the Game Manufacturers Association and its event Origins Online, a virtual games convention that was to take place on June 19-21. Because GAMA apparently took too much time to openly side with the protesters in a statement, numerous publishers cancelled their participation in Origins Online. The website Kotaku commented this silence was "more than silence [...] a refusal to support some of their most important and vulnerable members, who have long had to deal with all kinds of shit just for existing in the board game space“, which had „more than its fair share of problems with bigoted and hateful community members“. Kotaku cited the video game manufacturers' Entertainment Software Association as a comparison, which had already made a statement to this effect on June 2; this was the "absolute bare minimum of effort and support", but it was "at least something". The longer GAMA was intentionally or unintentionally silent, the worse it was going to get.
On June 10, GAMA finally spoke out: the association „believes that Black Lives Matter". It „unequivocally“ condemned „racism and violence against people of color“. „We have been too late in making that statement with force, and we apologize. The injustices of today demand that every person of good conscience make clear where they stand and we wish we had been more proactive, more strident, and more effective with our voices. Innocent people of color are being killed in the streets of the communities where we live, and it is not acceptable.“
GAMA's team and the publishers had "worked miracles" to organise Origins Online at such short notice, but one could not responsibly hold the virtual convention in this setting, which is why it was cancelled. All exhibitors, sponsors, advertisers and ticket buyers get their money back. In addition, GAMA wants to make it possible to donate these refunds voluntarily to civil rights organisations such as the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), matching this sum with a donation of its own in the same amount.
The regular Origins Game Fair had initially been postponed until October. Now GAMA has cancelled the show altogether because of the likelihood of a second virus wave in the fall and uncertainty about what restrictions the state of Ohio would then impose on major events. The intention was to give participants as much time as possible to react and adjust their plans.
