A list of 232 exhibitors was published by the organizers of SPIEL in Essen at the end of last week, announcing there would be "hundreds" more. The signal was clear: The fair organizers around Dominique Metzler definitely want an in-person fair again this year. And numerous exhibitors want it too, almost all large and small German publishers appear on the list. Only one big player was missing: Asmodee - and with it all studios belonging to the group. And that is no coincidence. The world's largest game publisher will not participate in the physical show this year.

"Events are very important to Asmodee and a matter of the heart. We can't wait to be able to participate again in small and large events where we share the joy of playing together and show our board games to the world," Robin de Cleur, PR and Communication Manager at Asmodee, commented in a press release by the German subsidiary of the global publisher on Monday. And further: "In the still unclear health situation in 2021 despite increasing vaccination rates, we take the health and safety of our employees, partners and players to heart. For this reason, we have made the decision not to participate with a booth at SPIEL in Essen this year. This applies to the Asmodee Group, the studios and Asmodee Germany."

This means that names like Lookout Games, Days of Wonder or Fantasy Flight Games will also be absent from the fair, just as all the studios. It also means that there is now room for other participants on several thousand square meters of exhibition space. Pure distribution partners of Asmodee, such as Munich-based publisher Hans im Glück, will be there, however. "We hope to meet you all again in person for many hours of games as soon as the situation allows," Asmodee's press release concluded.
