16.02.2024 - Vom 17. bis 19. Mai findet im italienischen Modena zum 15. Mal das Spielefest PLAY Festival del Gioco statt, zu dem sich rund 200 Aussteller angekündigt haben. Auf einer Gesamtfläche von 28.000 m² erwarten die Besucher unter anderem auch 2.500 Spieltische zum Ausprobieren der gezeigten Neuheiten. Seit 2021 hat die Veranstaltung einen wirklich internationalen Charakter, zur Ausgabe im letzten Jahr präsentierten sich 51 Marken aus dem Ausland. Als Herzstück des Festivals bezeichnen die Organisatoren den "Ludoteca"-Pavillon, wo im Vorjahr mehr als 10.000 Besucher über 2.250 Spielpartien starteten, unterstützt von Erklärpersonal.

Die Halle B auf dem Gelände der Messe Modena widmet sich Rollenspielen. Anlässlich des 50. Jubiläums des Genrebegründers Dungeons & Dragons läuft das diesjährige Festival unter dem Motto "Role Playing, Storytelling and Experience": Besondere Schwerpunkte sollen darauf liegen, welche Bedeutung Rollenspiele und das Spielen in der Gesellschaft haben, wie Spiele als Erzählmedium dienen und was man nebenbei lernen kann. Das Ereignis möchte so alle Rollenspiele feiern. Ehrengast ist David "Zeb" Cook, der die erste "Blue Box" von Dungeons & Dragons mit stilprägenden Regelwerken und Geschichten schuf; andere Arbeiten aus seiner Feder erschienen zum Beispiel für die Adventures of Indiana Jones oder Conan the Barbarian. Wie die Messe schreibt, bevorzugt Cook dabei überschaubare Regeln und regt die Vorstellungskraft von Spielern und Spielleitern an, um einzigartige Spielerfahrungen zu ermöglichen. Auf einem großen Tischdisplay zeigt das Spielefest D&D mit Spielmaterial aus mehreren Editionen, verbunden durch eine zusammenhängende Inszenierung, bei der frühere Aktionen die Zukunft beeinflussen.

Für die Messe zeichnet die in Modena geborene Buch-, Spiele- und Videospielillustratorin Francesca Baerald (u.a. D&D, Magic: The Gathering, Gloomhaven, Warhammer, Warcraft, Diablo IV, Horizon Forbidden West, Iron Throne) eigens eine "Fantasy-Karte" des Festivals. Ein weiterer prominenter Gast ist Xavier Georges, belgischer Autor von Carnegie, das letztes Jahr auf dem Festival mit den zwei Preisen "Goblin Magnificent" und "Goblin's Choice" ausgezeichnet wurde und davor auch den International Gamers Award erhalten hatte.

Ein anderer Themenbereich dreht sich um spielbasierte Forschungsprojekte: Universitäten und wissenschaftliche Institutionen des Landes aus der Astro-, Nuklear- und Geophysik sowie der Meeresforschung zeigen in der "Science Area", wie Erkenntnisse aus der Spieltheorie ihre eigene Arbeit beeinflussen.

From May 17 to 19, the 15th PLAY Festival del Gioco will take place in Modena, Italy, with around 200 exhibitors. On a total area of 28,000 square metres, visitors can expect 2,500 game tables to try out new products. Since 2021, the event has had a truly international character, with 51 brands from abroad exhibiting at last year's edition. The organizers describe the "Ludoteca" pavilion as the heart of the festival, where more than 10,000 visitors started over 2,250 games last year, explained by knowledgeable staff.

Hall B at the Modena fairground will be dedicated to role-playing games. To mark the 50th anniversary of genre founder Dungeons & Dragons, this year's festival will run under the motto "Role Playing, Storytelling and Experience": special emphasis will be placed on the importance of RPGs and gaming in society, how games serve as a narrative medium and what can be learned along the way. The event aims to celebrate all role-playing games. Guest of honor is David "Zeb" Cook, who created the first "Blue Box" of Dungeons & Dragons with style-defining rulebooks and stories; he also published other works for the Adventures of Indiana Jones or Conan the Barbarian. As the fair stated, Cook prefers straightforward rules and inspires the imagination of players and game masters to create unique playing experiences. On a large table-top display, the festival will showcase D&D with material from several editions, linked by a coherent setting where past actions influence the future.

The Modena-born book, game and video game illustrator Francesca Baerald (D&D, Magic: The Gathering, Gloomhaven, Warhammer, Warcraft, Diablo IV, Horizon Forbidden West, Iron Throne) will draw a "fantasy map" of the festival especially for the fair. Another prominent guest is Xavier Georges, Belgian author of Carnegie, which was awarded the two prizes "Goblin Magnificent" and "Goblin's Choice" at last year's festival and had previously also received the International Gamers Award.

Another topic area revolves around game-based research projects: Italian universities and scientific institutions from the fields of astrophysics, nuclear physics, geophysics and marine research will demonstrate in the "Science Area" how findings from game theory influence their own work.
