27.01.2021 – [English translation below] Die Deutschen wollen raus.

Kosmos: successful Exit strategy

The Germans want to get out. Not just because of the lockdown, but they're desperate to escape from the enchanted forest, or the haunted house of horrors, or the house of riddles. Escape room games continue to enjoy great popularity. One publisher in particular is benefiting from this: Kosmos. Almost five years ago, the Stuttgart-based company was one of the trend pioneers with the Exit series by designer couple Inka and Markus Brand (congenially supported by the editorial team of Sandra Dochtermann and Ralph Querfurth). This has consequences: "For the second year in a row, Kosmos leads the ranking of the top-selling publishers in the field of family and adult games," according to a recent press release from the publisher.

"With 1.5 million games sold in 2020 alone, Exit. Das Spiel has become the most successful board game brand, relegating the previous long-time top game brand to second place," explains spokeswoman Silke Ruoff. For many years, the number one seller had been Monopoly. The figures for this are listed every year by market researcher NPD Group in their business report "Retail Tracking Germany". Kosmos, like all publishers, benefited from the lockdown. While people stayed at home, there was also increased gaming. But: "With a clear double-digit increase in sales, the company is growing above market. Overall, Kosmos climbs to eighth place among the top-selling toy suppliers in Germany," the company emphasizes.

In the games segment, it was not only the Exit range (quickly growing into a product family with soon more than 30 entries, among them numerous books, the new game + puzzle series and for the first time an Advent calendar) but also other well-known brands such as Catan, Ubongo and Legends of Andor that contributed significantly to the success. Thanks to its Kennerspiel des Jahres win, The Crew was a bestseller, too, and Spiel des Jahres nominee My City also did remarkably well. "With almost 50,000 copies sold, the innovative tile game has shown that it's also very well received by the public," explains Heiko Windfelder, publishing director toys at Kosmos. "In addition, we were also able to score with our new series, including cooperative adventure games and story-based mystery puzzles." (ab)
