As previously reported, the upcoming SPIEL, taking place October 22–25, will add hall 8, thereby occupying the entire Essen exhibition grounds for the first time. This brings the total floor space to a new record of 81,200 m². With this increased capacity, the stage is set for a new attendance record: The fair expects 230,000 guests, which would raise the previous record of 220,000 from last year to the maximum possible number of visitors.
Currently, 921 exhibitors from 53 countries are registered, which means SPIEL is still slightly below last year’s figure of 948. According to the organizers, after sitting out the 2025 edition, many countries — including Argentina, Iceland, Kuwait, and Slovakia — will be back this year and help bring the number of new releases on display to well over 1,500.
In collaboration with Games Workshop, SPIEL is offering a large laser tag arena for the first time, where up to 24 participants can compete against each other in a Warhammer 40k setting. The official SPIEL app provides interactive hall maps, a list of new products, and navigation features, as well as a new B2B matchmaking tool designed to make networking easier for trade visitors.
The host city of Essen is also getting into the SPIEL spirit: Under the motto “Essen spielt!”, three game nights will be held featuring special discounts and refreshments for ticket holders.
In addition to the Deutscher Spiele Preis award, the TCG Awards will also be presented on-site for the first time, honoring the industry’s best trading cards worldwide; next to a panel of experts, card fans themselves can also vote for their favorite products. Meanwhile, Games Workshop’s Golden Demon miniature painting competition is already a familiar fixture at the Essen event: Over 1,000 international entries will be judged here in 14 categories by a panel of experts, with the most outstanding creation ultimately being awarded the “Slayer Sword.”
On the stage in Hall 4, the audience can once again look forward to free discussions, lectures, and other events on all four days of the convention without prior registration. A small participation fee is required for the “Educators Day,” which focuses on educational gaming topics. Those who cannot travel to Essen in person can watch content and events from the individual halls via the YouTube stream.
The face of SPIEL 2026 is American illustrator and artist Peter Mohrbacher, who is known, among other things, for his work on Magic: The Gathering and Angelarium.
Depending on the day, up to half of the available SPIEL tickets have already sold out. Tickets must be ordered online, as there will be no on-site sales. Regular one-day tickets for adults cost €25, with additional paid add-ons available for Laser Tag, Golden Demon, and Educators Day. For media professionals, the fair opens earlier on October 21 with a press conference, the DSP Awards ceremony, and the customary new product showcase.
